[From Times of India] SRINAGAR: Two scooter-borne youth tried to set a century-old Catholic church on fire at Srinagar's Residency Road Thursday evening. The main door of the Holy Family Catholic Church was partially burnt. The priest, Father Mathew Thomas, learnt about the fire on Friday and informed the police.

By then, cold weather and rain had doused the fire, said Father Mathew. A CCTV installed inside the church showed the youth entering the church around 8.15pm on Thursday with a bottle containing petrol. They sprinkled petrol on the main door of the church, set fire to it and walked out. Their faces were uncovered. Tahir Sajad Bhat, SP East Srinagar, though said the CCTV footage does not show faces of the miscreants.

In January, miscreants had set a motorcycle of a church employee, parked in the church premises, on fire, said Father Mathew. "We had informed the police then and registered an FIR at Kothi Bagh police station, but no action was taken," Father Mathew told TOI.

This time, the police have begun probe. In January, Kashmir's Mufti Bashir-ud-Din, head of self-styled Sharia court, had announced a fatwa against Christian schools in the valley. Last summer, there was a controversy following reports about some Muslim youths converting to Christianity.
